How would a society look if humans only used reason and logic and science to define it? What would men and women believe and how would they behave if all our traditional and irrational myths were dead? This is the world of the late twenty-first century where the wealthy entrepreneur Gordon Harper and the suprasensual and vivacious Fiona Doyle exist. These two Americans travel around the world seeking out sexual decadence in more and more intoxicating and horrifying ways.

Fiona does this because she accepts and celebrates the meaninglessness of life and only believes in pleasure because that is all there ultimately is, and she also thirsts to experience more of the darker pleasures of life no matter what the risks are. Gordon does this because he also relishes the pleasure and debauchery, but he is starting to have doubts about whether one can find contentment or satisfaction in such a meaningless world.

He finds himself longing for God and the spiritual, the idea of a soul and an afterlife, the belief that we are something more than an animal by mere chance, the knowledge that we exist in a moral universe where things do matter, and for life to have a meaning beyond the flesh.Yet he is trapped. How does one go back to believing the world is flat after they have learned that it is round? And so with his lover he goes deeper and deeper into the sexual abyss, almost as though he wants to destroy himself- and as they are doing this, a mysterious and horrifying war of growing madness threatens to engulf the world and destroy it.This is a mature literary book with very explicit sex and violent themes and would not be suitable for younger ages to read.
